Exploring the Art of Painting at La Quinta Art Celebration

Painting, as a medium, has the power to capture the vast spectrum of human experience. From the quiet introspection of a serene landscape to the energetic expression of a bold abstract, it transforms emotions, thoughts, and visions into visual narratives. The beauty of painting lies in its infinite interpretations, as artists employ different techniques—whether through the delicate layering of watercolor, the dynamic texture of a palette knife, or the use of unconventional materials—to tell their unique stories. Each brushstroke offers insight into the artist’s personal journey, allowing their inner world to come alive on canvas.

At this November's La Quinta Art Celebration, the Painting category will offer attendees a chance to immerse themselves in the rich diversity of this medium. With 48 painters showcasing their works, visitors will experience a broad spectrum of styles and techniques that highlight the creativity and depth of talent on display. From abstract compositions that stir the imagination to pieces that bring a sense of calm and reflection, this year’s event promises a captivating exploration of painting as an art form.

Let’s take a closer look at the stories behind some of the featured painters:

Roger Disney – A Palette Knife Visionary

Roger Disney

Oklahoma-based Roger Disney is known for his unique use of the palette knife to create his contemporary abstract paintings. Having studied in Europe and Australia, Disney’s works are defined by their dynamic textures and layers of color, achieved entirely through this distinct method. His approach allows him to express complex ideas and emotions in a way that invites viewers to engage with his art on a personal level.

Taman Van Scoy – Mastering Watercolor and Gouache

Taman Van Scoy

Taman Van Scoy, a Southern California-based artist and Best of Show winner, uses a combination of watercolor and gouache to create his tranquil paintings. Through layering pigments and employing both wet and dry techniques, Van Scoy’s works exude a sense of peace and serenity. His mastery over these mediums allows him to craft compositions that reflect calmness and inner quiet.

Olugunna Rahmon – New to La Quinta

Olugunna Rahmon

Olugunna Rahmon, from Illinois, is a contemporary abstract painter who works with oil on canvas. His vibrant use of color is central to his belief that art should bring healing and happiness to people. Rahmon’s abstract works are a celebration of joy, using bold and dynamic colors to evoke positive feelings in those who view them.

Viviana Stone – New to La Quinta

Viviana Stone

Viviana Stone, a new artist from Laguna Beach, brings a deep passion and purpose to her oil paintings. As she describes:

“My artwork is born from the chaos of our time, but with passion and purpose. Through my oil paintings, I seek to capture the emotions and energy of the world around me, creating pieces that reflect the challenges and beauty of life.”

Stone’s works are deeply reflective of the times, expressing emotional intensity and offering a visual commentary on the world through the medium of oil.

Trés Taylor – Featured Poster Artist at ENCORE 2024

Tres Taylor

Alabama-based artist Trés Taylor’s vibrant paintings tell the story of a monk who sneaks out of the monastery at night to dance with Cuban Cha Cha girls, leaving blooming Day Lilies in his wake. As Taylor explains:

“I paint my stories on tarpaper (or roofing felt) and use wood putty, house paint, and acrylics as my medium. Sometimes I will paint a story 60 feet in length on a roll of tarpaper and then cut it into smaller ‘palm of the hand’ stories.”

Taylor’s playful, yet spiritually rich, works reflect his belief in the joy of life, and his unique approach to storytelling through painting has made him a standout artist at this year’s celebration.
