This mesmerizing collection of moving wooden wall sculptures are the brainchild of award-winning artist, Ryan Kvande. “Creating sculptures is a meditative and inspirational process for me, I love to see the possibilities in something.” He started his art adventure in 2013, when he made two large pieces for his family’s home. In 2014, Ryan began jurying in to art shows and captivating crowds with his hand spun sculptures. People claimed that watching them is like getting lost staring into a campfire.
Throughout the decade, he has participated in renowned festivals across the U.S. His kinetic pieces can be found in private and public collections across the globe. He is represented by galleries in Aspen and Vail Colorado, Santa Fe New Mexico, Whistler Canada, Geneva Switzerland and more.
These kinetic sculptures are conceptualized in my mind by visualizing shapes and lines moving in moiré patterns. They create optical illusions and unfold into constant changing patterns as they slowly spin up to 30 minutes. Designs are created in Adobe, drawn onto Baltic Birch wood. Pieces are hand cut with a scroll saw and the edges beveled to round the sides. The finally shaping is done with a belt sander to define curves and points. The entire piece is then re-sanded by hand to further smooth the wood. The sculpture is colored with dye because it penetrates deeper into the wood and brings out the grain detail. It is finished with Tung oil, which brings out the wood grain more. Each part must be meticulously measured with a laser-accurate drill press for the level of precision needed. And each has instrument-grade, stainless steel sealed bearings to achieve the longest spin times. The art piece is unique in wood grain and its natural way it comes to rest on the wall. Ryan’s newest art creation are kinetic sculptures made from acrylic.
